米国では1992年の国家エネルギー政策法（Energy Policy Act of 1992: EPAct）および1996年のOrder 888・889の施行以来、規制緩和の進展とともに多くの企業で事業者間の合併・買収・多角化等、組織の変革が起きている。これらの変化は、競争的環境においていかに競争力を高めていくのか、という課題に直面しつつある米国の電気事業者による戦略的経営姿勢の現れであり、多くの場合規模の経済性や範囲の経済性を享受することにより競争上有利な地位を占めようとする行動に基づいている。このような動向の中、多角化意思決定が財務パフォーマンスに与える影響分析を行った研究はまだ行われていない。本稿では、米国電気事業において、財務パフォーマンスと多角化意思決定の間に相互依存的な関係が存在するのかどうかを検証し、それが肯定された場合、両者がどのように影響を及ぼしあっているのかを定量的に分析する。

概要 （英文）

This paper investigates a relationship between financial performance and decision making on business diversification using a data set of 46 US electric power utilities from 1991 to 1998. We apply a simultaneous equations model to the analysis, in which an observed continuous independent variable of financial performance and an unobserved latent variable for a decision making on business diversification are simultaneously determined. To analyze the relationship between firm’s total managerial performance and the decision making on diversification, this study employs two types of total financial performance indices, return on equity (ROE) and market value to book value (MVBR), which are commonly used in corporate financial analysis. The empirical results indicate that a positive relationship exists between the financial performances and the decision making, i.e., both of the increasing ROE and the increasing MVBR are explained by the decision on business diversification with statistical significance. To examine a relationship among deregulation, financial performance and electricity rate, this study also applies a discriminant analysis. The results suggest that a degree of the progress of deregulation and ROE are positively related, while MVBR is negatively related to the promotion of deregulation.
