Present Status and Practical Insufficiencies of Operator Support Systems for Nuclear Power Plant -Proposal of an Innovative Methodology of Supporting Operators-
Intensive literature survey has been done to grasp the present status of operator support systems (OSSs) developed for nuclear power plants (NPPs). This investigation clarified that there were some technical insufficiencies in the respects of supporting operators’ assessment of the current situation when his encountering an anomaly occurring in NPPs. Especially, there are no technical assist in operators’ foreseeing possible scenario revolution anytime coping with anomalies. Most of all systems are, so called, “diagnosis ‐ procedure advising” type of supporting methodology, that can not secure the situation in which it is impossible to make a diagnosis rapidly. To cover the insufficiencies, our developing “Mental Model” methodology, as is recognized as a “Cognitive Simulator” used in the Man-Machine Simulator (MMS) seems to be applicable. As a result, it could be evaluated that this methodology has a technical potential to overcome current insufficiency and also can make a positive contribution to develop ideal systems. This paper summarized as followings:(1) Operator Support Systems (OSSs) were developed widely before 1990, however, the improvement has terminated because of technical limitation of innovative methodology.(2) Listed up OSSs are classified into some groups due to its supporting area: supporting tasks, domains where existing operational procedures covers, cognitive functions that human operators usually executing in coping with anomalies and possible plant transients.(3) It was suggested that existing OSSs have functional insufficiencies in advising the possible scenario of plant revolution and operations prescribed in Alarm Handling Procedure as “if ANN A then PROCEDURE B” because previous OSSs could not tell the recommendation before exact diagnosis. (4) In the authors developing MMS, the mental model methodology (Cognitive Simulator) can make a distinct prediction of near future plant revolution in coping with anomalies from the early beginning of the events. This seems to be the innovative methodology synthesizing the necessary functions with the existing OSS to reach the ideal one.
