TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN TRANSMITTING ELECTRIC POWER EFFICIENTLY,SAFELY AND STABLY,FROM POWER STATIONS TO UTILITIES. THEREFORE,WHEN A FAULT OCCURS,IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DECREASE THE DAMAGE AND TO RECOVER QUICKLY. WHEN A FAULT OCCURS ON A TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM DUE TO LIGHTNING OR OVERVOLTAGE,THERE IS OFTEN AN ARC DISCHARGE AT THE FAULT POINT.THE ARC DISCHARGE HAS A HIGH CURRENT,HIGH TEMPERATURE(OVER 5000K),STRONG LIGHT EMISSION ETC.,SO IT SOMETIMES CAUSES SERIOUS DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT. TO INVESTIGATE THE ARC PHENOMENA IN POWER SYSTEMS,WE CARRIED OUT MANY ARC TESTS USING THE CRIEPI HIGH-POWER TEST FACILITIES. THE TEST DATASHOW THAT THE ARC DISCHARGE IS INFLUENCED BY THE CONDITIONS AROUND THEARC:GAS,INSULATION MATERIALS,GAP LENGTH WEATHER,ETC.(1)(2).
