本研究の目的は、揮発性有機化合物（VOC）の健康リスクを事例として、リスク情報の作成・評価・改善プロセスを実施することにより、化学物質に関して受け手の理解や対処に役立つ具体的な情報内容、および情報提供の際の留意点を明らかにすることである。
既報では、効果的なリスク情報を作成する手法であるメンタルモデル・アプローチを用いて、受け手の情報ニーズを把握し、受け手の視点から必要とされる情報内容を抽出した。本稿では、その結果に基づき、関心の高かったシックハウス症候群を主題とした資料案、および化学物質別の資料案を作成し、受け手による評価を通じて提供すべき具体的な情報内容の妥当性を検証した。
受け手評価の結果、両資料案とも全体的に肯定的意見が多く、既報の抽出内容を主に提供する重要性が示された。特に、化学物質は、蓄積されて影響が出るという概念が強いことが確認された。一方、リスク予防や回避の対策を選択する上での判断材料が十分でないとの意見が多かった。評価結果を踏まえ、資料作成目的に従い資料案を改善した。特に、受け手の知識が不足している体内動態（排泄）について、標的器官への蓄積と影響との関連に留意した情報提供が必要であることを明らかにした。また、VOCのようにリスク管理が実施されている化学物質の場合は、国や企業の対策を示した上で、個人で選択できる具体的な対策の効果や、そのリスクを含めたアドバイスを提供することが、情報内容への納得感を高める上で効果的であることが示唆された。今後は、不確実性が高く、個人的なリスク対策がより重視される経口曝露リスクを対象として本手法を適用していく。

概要 （英文）

The objective of this study is, through applying a method 'Mental Model Approach' to the case of health risks from volatile organic compounds, to produce, review and improve contents of information on risks resulted from chemical compounds, which are effective to foster understanding among the targeted laypeople, and draw useful lessons. In previous studies, the authors identified specific items of information to be necessarily provided for laypeople. Based on the findings, we produced sample brochures about sick house syndrome, formaldehyde, and benzene, which went through a review by a group of experts. The sample brochures were presented to the targeted laypeople, chosen from women bearing a child below school age, and we then conducted a group interview survey to evaluate the readers' impressions on the brochures, which focused on which points in them are not easily understood and/or should be attached with more detailed explanation. Based on the observations from the survey, improvements were given to the brochures. The study, while it revealed that the applied set of methodology is viable, also derived notable lessons in risk communication on chemicals in general, such as the target laypeople are demanding concrete information for judging proper measures to take for themselves. In the next step, the integrated methodology presented in this report will be applied to other chemical compounds, particularly those with risks via oral intake, to elaborate and prove it not only useful for risk-related information provision processes but also applicable to a wider range of chemical compounds.
