Barnacles are major fouling organisms in cooling water systems at electric power stations. To prevent settlement of fouling organisms such as barnacles, various antifouling techniques have been used. One of the most generally methods is antifouling coating including metal-based compounds, however the environmental effects of the metal-based compounds have been getting serious problems owing to their toxicity and action as endocrine disruptors. In order to develop ‘environmentally benign’ antifouling paints, several studies on antifouling paints applied natural antifouling products from marine organisms and some of which have been shown to be candidates for practical antifoulants. However, they have not yet been used commercially. On the other hand, basic research on settlement mechanisms of larvae in fouling sessile organisms must be useful for development of ‘environmentally benign’ antifouling technology. In this study, we examined whether settlement pheromone induce gregarious settlement of barnacle in the field. Field experiments using crude extracts of adult barnacles were carried out at Shizugawa bay, Miyagi. Adult extracts including settlement pheromone of the barnacles (Megabalanus rosa and Amphibalanus amphitorite) were prepared and applied onto slate plate or webron paper fixed on PVC plates, then the treated test plates were suspended with untreatment plates (control) at a depth of 3.0m for some days (3days-37days). After the test period, barnacles which settled on the plate’s surface were counted. When adult extracts were applied onto slate plates, barnacles dominantly settled on their surface in comparison with control surface. These results suggested that settlement pheromones induce affect contributes gregariousness or gregarious settlement barnacles not only in the laboratory but also under field conditions.
