本研究の目的は、情報の受け手の保持する知識や概念から、適切な化学物質のリスク情報内容を抽出することである。そこで、ベンゼンの健康リスクを対象とし、メンタルモデル・アプローチを用いて、専門家と受け手のメンタルモデルを明らかにした。両者のモデルを比較した結果、受け手は、①揮発性有機化学物質の吸入曝露・影響プロセスに関する大まかな知識構造を有する。②専門家が重視するヒトへの主な発生源・影響、環境中・体内での動態に関する知識が殆ど欠如していた。③化学製品からの鼻につんとくる刺激臭を吸うと、呼吸器系やアレルギー等の影響があり、臭いを防ぐ対策を想定していた。従って、リスクの理解と対処に必要とされる主な知識内容は、臭いがなくても曝露の可能性があること、ヒトへの曝露経路と影響器官は必ずしも一致しないこと、万一の際の想定汚染源・曝露経路や個人的対処法、および上記②の知識であることが示唆された。

概要 （英文）

The purpose of this study is to clarify what specific information should be provided for people to elicit their understanding and judgments regarding health risks of chemicals, taking benzene as an example and using ‘Mental Model’ Approach. Benzene is chosen because it is widely known and causes serious diseases, including leukemia. We have created experts’ mental model of benzene based on the risk analyses of benzene. Open-ended interviews with 30 people were then conducted. They covered such components of the experts’ mental model as emissions sources, pathways, health effects, etc. The responses were analyzed using the experts’ model as the benchmark and preliminary people’s mental model were drawn. Web survey of questionnaires of 211 persons was conducted to confirm the people’s mental model. The results from comparing of the two mental models suggest that, while people are generally concerned with smells of chemicals connected with risks from volatile organic compounds (VOC), they do not have any specific knowledge about health risks from benzene. It has been identified that information to be provided for people should substantiate-differentiate the risk messages and include: a) the relation between smell and VOC health risks; b) the major health effect from chronic low concentration exposure; c) most important emissions sources; d) fading in environment and body excretion. The methodology is applicable to other chemical compounds. Authors plan to supply concrete information sets for effective communication on benzene health risks.
