当研究所は、手賀沼に堆積したヘドロをブロックとタイルの原材料資源として有効利用する方法の開発を行ってきた。ヘドロの配合割合や焼成温度等の工夫により、耐久性のある歩道ブロック、一般の屋外利用のための外構ブロック、さらに不透水で滑り防止を施した室内床タイルを製造することが可能となり、製造コストの点からも社会に供給できる段階に達した。このブロックとタイルは、ヘドロのほかレンガ屑なども含めて約80％の廃棄物を原材料としていることが特徴のひとつである。また、JIS規格などで要求される物理的基準、および環境影響の点からの有害物質溶出濃度は、ともにそれぞれの基準値を満たしている。現在、自治体の公共施設に採用され、市民生活の用に供している。

概要 （英文）

We have been trying to develop the methods for reclaiming primary material resources of blocks and tiles from sedimentary bottom sludge in Lake Teganuma. The methods have made it possible to produce durable sidewalk-blocks, exterior blocks for general outside use, and impermeable and non-slip interior tiles. The developments have been accomplished enough to supply these goods to the market with reasonable producing costs. One of the features of these is that 80% of them are made of wastes including bottom sludge, brick fragments, etc.. In addition, they satisfy the physical standards, i.e. JIS and the other similar ones, and satisfy the environmental standards of harmful leached trace elements. They are now being used in some public facilities of the municipalities around Lake Teganuma.
