メニュー検索では、ユーザが正しい項目を選択することは重要である。しかし初心者のユーザは、対象分野の知識がないため、正しい項目選択が非常に難しい。本論文では、汎用的な分類体系(市販の類語辞書)と、対象分野固有の分類体系(対象文書の目次の構造)に基づくメニューを組合せて相互の項目間の関係を提示することで、分野の知識のないユーザでも、項目の下位に何が分類されているか推測しやすいメニューシステムを提案した。そして、これを相補メニューシステムと名づけた。実験の結果、相補メニューシステムは、単独のメニューシステムより項目選択の誤りが10%ほど少なかった。また被験者の3/4が比較したメニューシステムの中で、相補メニューシステムを最も支持した。

概要 （英文）

It is indispensable for effective information retrieval using a hierarchical menu system that users make right selections of items in each menu. However, it is difficult to design such a hierarchical menu system whose item can be correctly selected by novice users because they lack knowledge for right selections. In this report, we propose a method to implement a easy-to-build and easy-to-retrieve menu system named ``Complementary menu system'' by combining and coordinating two hierarchical menu systems, each of which can be build relatively easily and which gives different kinds of information, general and domain-specific. In our developed prototype system, one is a hierarchical menu system based on a word taxonomy used in a thesaurus and the other is based on a document structure, i.e., a table of contents of target documents. Our experiment shows that the complementary menu system reduces wrong selections of menu items by about 10 % from the one of component menu systems. By inquiry for users and a log analysis, it is suggested that the combination of general and domain-specific menu systems enables users to choose more right selection. familiar menus and that context sensitive information shown on a menu is a good guide for the user'sright selection because it explains the content of the items in the other menu.
