最近、Linuxと呼ばれるUnix互換のＯＳが急速に普及しており、マスコミからも注目を浴びている。このＯＳは基本的に誰でも自由に、無料に利用することができるので、非常に安価に業務に用いるシステムを構築できる可能性がある。しかも多数の人によって使われ、機能の検証を受けているため、安定しているとも言われている。本資料では、このようなLinuxの特徴を調査し、業務への適用可能性を検討した。その結果、中小規模の業務用サーバーとしてはLinuxは既に普及の段階に入っており、十分業務環境での利用可能性は高いことが判明した。今後は、具体的な導入方法に関して検討を行う必要がある。

概要 （英文）

Recently a Unix compatible Operating System called ``Linux'' attractsa great deal of attention. Linux is based on ``Open Source Licenses''and anyone can use freely as long as he follows the licenses.If Linux is applicable to business, very cost-effective business systemscan be built.This investigation reports aims to clarify the characteristics ofLinux and examine the applicability of Linux to business.The main results of this investigation is as follows:1. Linux system is rapidly popularizing from 1998, and establishing theposition as the small-medium scale bussiness servers in the office.2. But Linux systems are not fit to be used as large scale businessservers, because of a performance problem of Linux SMP(Symetric MultiProcessor) system.3. In educational and technical fields, Linux systems are used asinexpensive Unix Workstations and fast parallel computingenvironments, and have enough achievements in those fields.4. When applying Linux to business, the system maintener need to satisfy three conditions:a. Having knowledge and Know-Hows about Unix systemsb. Continuous self efforts of getting information concerning Linuxc. Ability of verification of the hardware compatiblity to Linux
