コンピュータ利用者層の広がりと利用目的の多様化という二つの変化がユーザインタフェース技術に対して大きく二つの側面から課題を与えている。一つは前者に対応する「誰もがコンピュータを使える技術」であり、もう一つは後者に対応する「操作の複雑さを減らす技術」である。これらの課題に対してはデスクトップメタファーに代表される直接操作という考え方が有効とされており色々な応用がなされている。これは言わばユーザインタフェースを利用者の手足のように親密にし、利用者の能力を引き出すことで操作を容易にするという考え方である。本論文では従来の直接操作では扱うのが難しかった、整理の十分でない多量の情報に対する整理・検索システムを扱うために、直接操作の考えを拡張した。また拡張した直接操作の基準として新たに明瞭なフィードバックという概念を導入した。明瞭なフィードバックとは情報検索・整理システムを操作して行く過程で利用者がシステムの振る舞いを正確に把握できるようになるという性質を意味する。そして、この拡張した直接操作の考えと明瞭なフィードバックという基準に基づいて開発した、全文検索とビデオ整理、ビデオ検索を扱う3つの応用システムについて述べた。

概要 （英文）

Spread of computer users and diversification of usage have raised the following subjects of user interface technology. One of the subjects is ``technology in which everyone can use a computer'', and another one is ``technology reducing the complexity of operation''. The conventional concept named ``direct manipulation'' represented by the desktop metophor has been applied to these subjects, and its effectiveness has been confirmed. Using the system based on direct manipultaion, users can learn basic functionality quickly and feel in control, and the system responses are predictable. However, it was difficult to treat a lot of information that is not yet arranged in the conventional direct manipulation. Then, I extend direct manipulation to treat such information in this paper. Moreover, I introduce the concept of ``clear feedback'' newly as a standard of the extended direct manipulation. With clear feedback, the user can grasp the behavior of the system in a direct and clear way, during the operation of the information retrieval and organizing system. Three application systems treating a full-text search, video segmentation and video retrieval based on the idea of this extended direct manipulation and the standard of clear feedback were described.
