IN ORDER TO CLARIFY THE MECHAN ISM OF FRACTURE INITIATION AND EXTENSION CAUSED BY HYDRAULIC F RACTURING, THE IN-SITU HYDRAULI C FRACTURING EXPERIMENTS HAVE B EEN CONDUCTED AS A COOPERATIVE STUDY BETWEEN THE INSTITUTE OF CRUSTAL DYNAMICS, SSB, CHINA AN D THECENTRAL RESEARCH INSTITUT E OF ELECTRIC POWER INDUSTRY, J APAN. A BOREHOLE OF 300M LONG I N A FRESH AND INTACT ROCK WAS U SED FOR THE EXPERIMENTS. THE FO LLOWING ARE THE MAIN RESULTS. (1) CRACK INITIATION MECHANIMS AND ROCK STRESS: IT HAS BEEN MA DE CLEAR THAT THE BREAKDOWN CRI TERION SHOULD BE SELECTED ACCOR DING TO THE CONDITION OF WATER PERMEATION. THE REOPENING AND T HE CLOSING OF THE HYDRAULIC FRA CTURE WERE INVESTIGATED TO EVAL UATE THE ROCK STRESS AT THE TES T SITE. THE DIRECTION OF THE HO RIZONTAL MAXIMUM COMPRESSIONAL STRESS IS IN N-S. (2) FRACTURE EVALUATION BY ACOU STIC EMISSION: THE DIRECTIONS O F P AND T AXES OBTAINEDFROM TH E FOCAL MECHANISM SOLUTIONS OF ACOUSTIC EMISSIONS AGREE WELL WITH THOSE EVALUATED FROM THE HY DRAULIC FRACTURING STRESS MEASU REMENT. (3) FRACTURE EVALUATION BY SELF POTENTIAL: THE POSITIVE CHANGE OF SP AROUND THE FRACTURING BO REHOLE DISTRIBUTED ON TWO SUPER IMPOSED ELLIPSOIDS. THEIR MAJOR AXES ROUGHLY COINCIDED WITH TH E STRIKES OF HYDRAULICALLY CREA TED FRACTURES AND THE NEAREST N ATURAL JOINT.
