TWO DESIGN METHODS FOR METAL FUEL FBR CORE TO SECURE FUEL INTEGRITY DURING TRANSIENT EVENTS BY LIMITING EUTECTIC-LIQUID PHASE FORMATION WERE PROPOSED BASED ON THE CURRENT STATUS OF METALLIC FUEL DEVELOPMENT. THESE WERE APPLIED TO CORE DESIGNS BY CRIEPI TO CLARIFY THEIR EFFECT ON THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SETTING OF METAL FUEL CORE DESIGN. IN THE STUDY,SESAME/SALT DEVELOPED BY CRIEPI WAS USED TO ANALYZE FUEL BEHAVIORS. A NEWLY DEVELOPED THERMAL-HYDRAULICS CODE SE2-FA WAS USED FOR CORE FLOW DISTRIBUTION DESIGN. AS THE RESULT,IT WAS FOUND THAT CORE DESIGN APPROACHES TO ACHIEVE HIGHER TEMPERATURE WOULD BE LIMITED IF A DESIGN LIMITATION IS SET TO PREVENT EUTECTIC-LIQUID PHASE FORMATION DURING TRANSIENT EVENTS.ON THE OTHER HAND,A DESIGN METHOD TO ALLOWSMALL EUTECTIC-LIQUID PHASE FORMATION BASED ON RECENT EXPERIMENTAL DATA WAS FOUND TO ENABLE HIGHER TEMPERATURE DESIGN. METAL FUEL FBR WILL ACHIEVE HIGH TEMPERATURE IF THE EXISTENCE AND VALUE OF THRESHOLD TEMPERATURE IS PROVEN AND THE DESIGN BASIS FOR LIQUID PHASE PENETRATION RATE ISDEVELOPED IN THE COURSE OF FUTURE R&D EFFORTS.
