ON THE KANTO PLAIN LOCAL SEA BREEZES GENERATED IN THE MORNING DEVELOP AND BECAME INTEGRATED INTO LARGE-SCALE,SOUTHERLY WINDS IN THE AFTERNOON. DATAILED ANALYSIS OF THE HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL STRUCTURES OF THIS EXTENDED LAND AND SEA BREEZE SYSTEM WAS PERFORMED TO CLARITY THE SYSTEM MECHANISMS THE WIND SYSTEM OCCURRING ON THE KANTO PLAIN ON A FINE DAY IS FOLLOWED BY A REMARKABLE DIURNAL VARIATION OF MESO-SCALE PRESSURE PATTERNS CONSISTING OF A THERMAL DEPRESSION IN THE DAY AND A THERMAL ANTICYCLONE AT NIGHT AROUND THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINOUS REGION OF JAPAN. ANALYSES SHOW THAT A STRONG HORIZONTAL TEMPERATURE GRADIENT OCCURS AT A HEIGHT OF SEVERAL HUNDRED METERS ABOVE SEA LEVEL BETWEEN THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINOUS REGION AND THE KANTO PLAIN. THIS MAY BE THE MAIN CAUSE OF THE EXTENDED LAND AND SEA BREEZE,OR THE ENLARGED PLAIN-PLATEAU BREEZE CIRCULATION PROPOSED INITIALLY BY N. MANNOUJI. THREE-DIMENSIONAL WIND SIMULATION RESULTS ALSO SHOW THE IMPORTANCE OF THE HORIZONTAL TEMPERATURE GRADIENT IN THE UPPER LAYER WHEN GENERATED BY THE THERMAL EFFECT OF THE MOUNTAINS.
