THIS REPORT DESCRIBES STUDIES OF AND IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SAFER CODE MADE AT OUR INSTITUTE SINCE THE PREVIOUS REPORT. FIRST,THE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT DETERMINATION METHOD EMPLOYED IN SAFER WAS STUDIED AND A NUMBER OF NECESSARY IMPROVEMENTS WERE FOUND. NEXT,TO IMPROVE THE ACCURACY OF CRACK PROPAGATION RATE EVALUATION,A DETAILED ELASTIC-PLASTIC-CREEP ANALYSIS WAS PERFORMED ON A BORE CRACK MODEL,ELUCIDATING THE EFFECT OF TRANSIENT THERMAL STRESS ON CRACK PROPAGATIONDURING STEADY-STATE OPERATION. FURTHER EXPERIMENTAL STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT OF A SIMPLIFIED EVALUATION TECHNIQUE BASED ON THIS ANALYSIS ARE DESIRABLE. FINALLY,THE VALIDITY OF THE DATA USED BY SAFER TO EVALUATE LIFEWAS STUDIED ON THE BASIS OF DATA FROM LITERATURE AS WELL AS OUR EXPERIMENTS,AND IT WAS FOUND THAT EXCEPT FOR FATIGUE DATA,THE DATA USED IN SAFER GIVE MORE CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATES THAN THE VALUES IN OTHER SOURCES.
