OBJECTIVES WITH THE INCREASE IN THE SIZE OF SCIENTIFIC COMPUTATIONS IN RECENT YEARS THERE HAS BEEN A REMARKABLE INCREASE IN DEMAND FOR SCIENTIFIC COMPUTATIONS IN THE COMPUTER CENTER OF THE ELECTRIC POWER COMPANIES. THE SHARE OF TOTAL DEMAND FOR SCIENTIFIC COMPUTATIONS IN THE ELECTRIC POWER COMPANIES HAS ALREADY BECOME SO GREATTHAT IT CAN NO LONGER BE IGNORED, AND THE TREND TOWARDS INCREASE IN THIS DEMAND IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE. LARGE-SCALE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS NOT ONLY CONSUME A GREAT DEAL OF COMPUTATIONAL RESOURCES; GREAT OUTLAYS OF FUNDS ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO DEVELOP AND MAINTENANCE THESE PROGRAMS. IN ORDER TO USE THE COMPUTER EFFICIENTLY AND REDUCE THESE EXPENSES, THERE MUST BE A METHODOLOGY FOR ASSURING THE QUALITY OF SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS. THE PURPOSE OF OUR RESEARCH PROJECT WAS TO DETERMINE THE STANDARDS BY WHICH THE SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS CAN BE ASSESSED QUALITATIVELY AND THE METHODS BY WHICH THIS QUALITY CAN BE IMPROVED. RESULTS PROBLEMS ARISING AT EACH STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT, ADMINISTRATION ANDMAINTENANCE OF SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS WERE CAREFULLY EXAMINED AND PROGRAMQUALITY ASSURANCE GUIDELINES WERE DEVELOPED TO RESOLVE THEM. IF CONTROL IS EXERCISED PROPERLY ACCODING TO THESE GUIDELINES, FUNDS FOR DEVELOPING SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS AND COMPUTER RESOURCES CAN BE USED FAR MORE EFFECTIVELY.
