IN ORDER TO CLARIFY THE MECHANISM OF HIGH OXIDANT EPISODE AT THE LAND SURFACE IN SPRING, BOTH UPPER AND LAND OZONE OBSERVATIONS WERE CARRIED OUT FROM APRIL TO JUNE, 1983. THE RESULTS WERE ANALYZED USING AEROLOGICAL DATA AND AMEDAS DATA AND REFERRING TO HATHORN AND WALKER (1976). DURING THE OBSERVATION PERIOD, THERE WERE 11 DAYS OF HIGH OXIDANT EPISODES WHICH WERE DEFINED AS WHEN THE RECORDED OZONE CONCENTRATION EXCEEDED 100 PPB ST ANY OF FIVE STATIONS. SOME METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE EPISODE OCCURRED AT THE SURFACE WERE EXTRACTED FROM THREE EXAMPLES WHEN THE UPPER OZONE DISTRIBUTIONS WERE OBSERVED, AND THE MECHANISM OF THE EPISODE WAS INVESTIGATED. AS A RESULTOF THESE ANALYSES,IT IS CLARIFIED THAT THE STRATOSPHERIC AIR WITH HIGHCONCENTRATION OZONE INTRUDED INTO TROPOSHERE THROUGH THE TROPOPAUSE GAP (FOLDING) BEHIND THE CYCLONE AND CONTINUED TO FALL GRADUALLY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE HIGH OXIDANT EPISODE AT THE SURFACE. IT IS ALSO STRESSED THAT THE SUBSIDING OF STRATOSPHERIC OZONE WAS RELATED TO THE POSITIONS OF BOTH CYCLONES AND ANTICYCLONES.
