THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS CODE PIPE-6 HAS RECENTLY BEEN DEVELOPED TO EVALUATE THE FRACTURE BEHAVIOR OF CRACKED TYPE 304 STAINLESS STEEL PIPE. CIRCUMFERENTIAL CRACK PROPAGATION UNDER A TENSILE LOAD CAN BE SIMULATED BY THE RELEASE OF THE NODAL CONSTRAINT AT THE CRACK TIP,WHEN THE CRITERION FOR THE CRACK TIP OPENING ANGLE(CTOA)IS SATISFIED. NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS ARE COMPARED WITH EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS FOR LOAD, DISPLACEMENT AND CRACK EXTENSION AMOUNT. CRACK INSTABILITY IS PREDICTED FROM THE DISPLACEMENT-CONTROLLED CONDITIONS BY CONSIDERING THE EFFECT OF THE COMPLIANCE ON THE LOADING SYSTEM. A GOOD AGREEMENT IS OBTAINED BETWEEN THE NUMERICAL ANALSIS AND THE EXPERIMENT.
