THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TO PRESENT THE THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF A CIRCUMFERENTIAL THROUGH-WALL CRACK PROPAGATION IN TYPE 304 STAINLESS STEEL PIPE. THE SIMPLIFIED ANALYSIS MODEL OF CRACK PROPAGATION IS NEWLY DEVELOPED TO PREDICT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LOAD AND DEFORMATION WITH CRACK PROPAGATION BASED ON THE CRACK TIP OPENING ANGLE (CTOA) CRITERION AND THE EXPERIMENTAL LOAD-DISPLACEMENT RELATIONSHIP. CRACK INSTABILITY IS ESTIMATED FROM THE DISPLACEMENT CONDITION, INCLUDING THE EFFECT OF COMPLIANCE IN THE LOADING SYSTEM. SOME EFFECTS OF CRACK DIMENSION, COMPLIANCE AND LOADING CONDITIONS ON CRACK INSTABILITY ARE DISCUSSED AND THE RELATIVELY GOOD AGREEMENTS ARE OBTAINED BETWEEN THE SOLUTIONS BY SIMPLIFIED ANALYSIS AND THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS.
