DETERMINING THE INTEGRITY OF NUCLEAR PIPING SYSTEMS OFTEN CALLS FOR AN ASSESSMENT OF THE MARGIN OF SAFETY IN SUCH SYSTEMS IN THE PRESENCE OF STRESS CORROSION CRACKINGS(SCC).THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE ANALYSIS OF CRACK EXTENSION BEHAVIOR IN DUCTILE MATERIAL SUCH AS TYPE 304 STAINLESS STEEL PIPE IN WHICH SCC HAVE BEEN DETECTED. FIRST,PLASTAN-II, A TWO-DIMENSIONAL FINITE ELEMENT CODE FOR THE ANALYSISOF CRACK EXTENSION,HAS BEEN NEWLY DEVELOPED AND VERIFIED BY THE ANALYSIS OF TWO BENCHMARK PROBLEMS. NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS ARE COMPARED WITH THESOLUTIONS OBTAINED USING OTHER CODES,WITH RESPECT TO LOAD,DISPLACEMENT,J-INTEGRAL,AND OTHER PARAMETERS. GOOD AGREEMENT IS ODTAINED BETWEEN THE NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS AND THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. SECOND, THIS CODE IS USED TO PREDICT STABLE/UNSTABLE CRACK EXTENSIONS FOR FLAT PLATE SPECIMENS. STABLE CRACK EXTENSION CAN BE ESTIMATED BY CRITERIA BASED ON THE J-INTEGRAL AND THE CRACK TIP OPENING ANGLE (CTOA). CRACK INSTABILITY ISEXAMINED BY EVALUATING THE STABLE CRACK EXTENSION AMOUNT AT INSTABILITY UNDER THE CRITERION THAT THE TOTAL DEFORMATION INCLUDING THE COMPLIANCE IN THE LOADING SYSTEM TAKES ON A CONSTANT VALUE DURING CRACK EXTENSION. SUCH A CRITERION CAN BE DIRECTLY APPLIED ALSO TO THE ANALYSIS OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL CRACK EXTENSION IN THE PIPING STRUCTURE.
