IN PWR S STEAM GENERATORS, DENTING DUE TO CORROSION OF THE SUPPORT PLATE MATERIAL,CARBON STEEL IS AN IMPORTANT PROBLEM. THE EFFECT OF CHLORIDES ON CORROSION ACCELERATION OF MILD STEEL WAS STUDIED. CORROSION TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT IN THE DEAERATED SOLUTIONS OF SODIUM CHLORIDE AND MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE WHICH ARE MAIN CONSTITUENTS OF SEA WATER.1)THE SOLUTION OF MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE WAS MORE CORROSIVE THAN THAT OF SODIUM CHLORIDE.WITH INCREASING CHLORIDE CONCENTRATION,THE MORE CORROSIVE IN MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE AND LESS CORROSIVE IN SODIUM CHLORIDE.2)THE CORROSION RATE IN THE MIXED SOLUTION OF SODIUM CHLORIDE AND MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE WAS GOVERNED BY THE CONCENTRATION OF THE MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION.3)ACIDIFICATION OF THE MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION WAS EVALUATED EXPERIMENTALLY AT 100 DEGREE,THE DEGREE OF ACIDIFICATION INCREASED WITH INCREASING THE CONCENTRATION.HOWEVER,THE VALUE OF PH DURING CORROSION WAS DETERMINED BY THE CONCENTRATION OF THE DISSOLVED FERROUS IONS.4)THE CORROSION ACCELERATION BY MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE WAS DERIVED FROM NOT ONLY ACIDIFICATION OF THE MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION BUT CONTINUOUS SUPPLEMENTATION OF HYDROGEN IONS WITH THE HYDROLYSIS OFFERROUS IONS.
