植物体付着塩分の葉面への浸透を規制する主要因は,葉面のワックス層の発達の程度,つまり葉面の撥水性の大小である。本研究は主要な樹種23種について,塩分浸透の指標として葉面の液滴接触角を測定し取りまとめたものである。液滴接触角が最も大きな葉は針葉樹で,常緑広葉樹がこれに続き,小数の例外を除いては落葉広葉樹が最も小さかった。撥水性と付着塩分の葉内浸透の難易との関係は,葉面の撥水性の高い樹種は塩分が浸透し難く,反対に低い樹種は浸透し易い傾向が認められた。

THE PENETRATION OF SALT ADHERED TO THE PLANTINTO THE LEAF DEPENDS MAINLY ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WAX ON THE LEAFSURFACE,WE MEASURED THE CONTACT ANALE OF WATER DROPLETS ON THE SURFACEOF THE LEAF,ELUCIDATED THE DEGREE OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE WAX LAYER ON THE LEAF SURFACE FROM WATER REPELLENCY,AND ESTIMATED THE PENETRABILITY OF ADHERED SALT INTO THE LEAF.THESE RESULTS WERE COMPARED WITH THE VELOCITY OF SALT PENETRATING INTO THE LEAF OBTAINED PREVIOUSLY,AND THE WATERREPELLENCY AND SALT PENETRATION OF THE LEAVES WERE DISCUSSED.THE WATERREPELLENCY AS JUDGED FROM THE CONTACT ANGLE OF WATER DROPLETS ON THE LEAF SURFACE IN CONIFEROUS TREES WAS THE HIGHEST FOR THE NEW LEAVS OF CHAMAECYRARIS TREES.THE NEW LEAVES OF PINUS DENSIFLORA AND CRYPTOMERIA WERE HIGHLY REPELLENT WITH A CONTACT ANALE OF AROUND 90 DEGREE. BROAD-LEAVES EVER GREEN TREES REPELLED WATER NEALY AS MUCH AS THE CONIFEROUS TREES. CHARACTERISTICALLY,THE LOWER SURFACE OF THE LEAVES WERE HIGLY REPELLENT. THE WATER REPELLENCY OF THE UPPER SURFACE TENDED TO BE MUCH LOWERIN THE OLD LEAVES. EXCEPT FOR ZELKOVA SERRATA,BOTH SURAFACE OF THE BROAD-LEAVES EVERGREENS. OF THE TREES EXAMINED,THE DECIDUOUS FRUIT TREES EXCLUDING VITIS UNIFERA WERE THE LEAST WATER REPELLENT. FROM THESE RESULTS AND THE STUDIES ON THE PENETRABILITY OF ADHERED SALT IN RELATION TO THE WATER REPELLENCY OF THE LEAF SURFACE OF TREES,IT WAS FOUND THAT SALT HARDLY PENETRATES INTO THE LEAVES OF TREES WITH A HIGHLY WATER-REPELLENT LEAF SURFACE,BUT THAT IT EASILY PENETRATES INTO THE LEAVES OF TREESWITH LEAF SURFACE THAT ARE LESS WATER-REPELLENT.
